First of all, I mostly enjoyed The Last Jedi as a Star Wars fan. I thought it presented many new interesting developments that unfortunately executed in not really well done ways. But I'm not here to write a review (god knows how many of those are out there), I'm just presenting my own version of TLU. It'll be mostly the same as how it was in Rian Johnson's version, but there are also a few major changes.
The first 10 minutes of the movie would be exactly the same. IMO it was the most 'Star Wars'-like part of the movie, though I might downplay Poe taunting Hux a bit. It felt too much 'our world' than Star Wars. Other than that, the whole thing is solid. Finn wakes up to find Rose taking care of him while he was in coma. The whole encounter in the escape pod bay where Finn gets tased by Rose would be cut, as I feel it adds nothing to the story.
Now this is where the plot changes. This whole new arc will be in place instead of the Canto Bight arc. Instead of arriving at nowhere, the Resistance fleet would've arrived at a planet in the New Republic territory. Here, the fleet stops to rearm and refuel. Here, Leia finds out that the whole New Republic is in disarray after Starkiller Base destroyed the Hosnian System in TFA, and the First Order took advantage of the chaos to launch a full-scale invasion all over the galaxy. As soon as she realizes this, a First Order fleet, led by Snoke's flagship the
Supremacy itself, arrives at the planet and launches an attack. Kylo Ren personally leads a figther squadron to attack the
Raddus. Leia would sense his presence like she did in the film and tries one more time to turn him back to the light side. This is because I wanted to explore Leia's relationship with her son more. In the real film, it's too underdeveloped. While Kylo is still conflicted, his wingmen attacks the
Raddus's main bridge, but since Leia isn't on it at the time, she doesn't have to go fly around in space this time. Instead, she'll display her force power by saving the bridge crew from being blasted into space. That way, she managed to save Admiral Ackbar, though he's severely injured by the blast and gets into a coma. The sheer stress of the force power also rendered Leia comatose as well, leaving only Vice Admiral Holdo in command.
Meanwhile, Poe, Finn, Rose, and some of the Resistance forces planetside are doing whatever they can to evacuate as many civilians as possible off the planet. Vice Admiral Holdo, realizing that the remaining Resistance forces would never be able to fight the far superior First Order fleet, orders a retreat. Poe, who was in the air in his X-wing at the time, had no choice but to follow her orders and grudgingly leaves Finn, Rose, and some Resistance troops behind to escape to hyperspace, leaving them trapped on the planet as the First Order forces conquered it. This is to set up Poe and Holdo's conflict to be more believable than in the film, where Holdo questionably decided to withheld important information from Poe and the rest of the crew, which results in a severe misunderstanding that almost doomed the Resistance.
In the meantime, Rey finds Luke Skywalker, who refuses to train her but relents after R2 shows him Leia's message to Obi-Wan Kenobi, just like in the film. Rey's arc would remain mostly the same, with her bonding with Kylo Ren through the Force. However, I'll change the reason why Ben Solo fell to the dark side. Luke's characterization where he almost decided to kill an unarmed Ben in his sleep was severely criticized by fans as totally ruining his character, so here I think I'll change it a bit: Luke was going fine with training Ben and a group of new generations of Jedi, until one day Snoke shows up out of the blue and attacks the academy. Luke tries to defend it, but since he's not in his prime anymore, he's no match for Snoke's powers and loses. Ben and a group of younglings are kidnapped by Snoke, while the rest are killed. Ben, who's simultaneously fearing for his life and disappointed at his uncle for failing to save him, fell easily to Snoke's corruption and became Kylo Ren. Luke was saved by Lor San Tekka, the old man from TFA's opening, and decides to go into hiding and learn more about the Force until he becomes powerful enough to save his students, but became disillusioned when he learns more about the Jedi's history: the battles between the light side and the dark side have been going on for millenias. When one side is triumphing over the other, the other will rise up again and wipes out most of the winning side and brings back the balance to the Force. This happens to both in Jedi and Sith sides. Every once in a while, there's a great Sith purge, or a great Jedi purge, and every time it happened the galaxy fell into a prolonged war that devastated planets. New chosen ones arise to bring balance back to the force and so on. Anakin was nobody special, Luke was nobody special. They were just pawns to the Force. Hence why Luke became disillusioned in the Force, gave up on his quest and went into exile.
Finn, Rose, and the stranded Resistance members try to find their way off the planet while being pursued relentlessly by a First Order hitsquad led personally by Captain Phasma. They enlisted the help of DJ, who at first help them deativate the planetary shield and allow their ship to escape the planet, only to lead them to General Hux himself on the
Supremacy, just like in the movie. In the meantime, the Resistance fleet is under constant pressure from the pursuing First Order fleet. Poe argues with Holdo over the Resistance troops left behind, with Poe insisting to go back and save them while Holdo wants to lead the rest of the fleet to safety at an old Rebel Alliance stronghold on planet Crait. Angry, Poe decided to stage a mutiny, only to be stopped by Leia herself when she healed from her injury. Together, Leia and Holdo convince Poe that he should prioritize saving the rest of the Resistance first. Live to fight another day, as they say. Unfortunately, DJ's trechery allows the First Order to discover the smaller transports escaping the ship. Admiral Ackbar, who recovered, decides to remain behind on the
Raddus to cover the Resistance escape ships. And he's the one who's going to pull that light speed kamikaze move. That way, Ackbar could go out in a more dignified way while Holdo could also live to fight another day.
Rey flees Ahch-to to try to redeem Ben Solo on her own just like in the movie, while Luke gets some encouragement from the Force Ghost of Yoda. Yoda explained that in his long life, he too had questioned how the Force treated everything in the galaxy, but then come to the realization that it's part of nature. With too much side having power, the galaxy has no balance. It must be constantly tested in order to improve life further upon, and that it's the duty of the Force users - both Jedi and Sith - to refine that balance into something better.
Rey boards the
Supremacy while Chewie takes the Falcon into hyperspace with a promise to bring back some help from 'an old friend'. Rey is recovered by Kylo Ren who takes her to see Snoke. The same happened. Kylo Ren kills Snoke but refused to redeem himself, he reveals that Rey's parents were no one, etc. Rey, Finn and Rose escape in the ensuing chaos when Ackbar rammed his ship into the
Supremacy, while Phasma remains alive this time. All the Resistance members who got captured are unfortunately all killed.
The surviving Resistance members reunite and make their stand on Crait as the First Order launches a ground assault. The same thing happened like in the movie. The Resistance tried and failed to take down the First Order's battering ram cannon, and all hopes seemed lost until Chewie and Rey shows up in the Falcon, alongside no other than Lando Calrissian, who's back in the cockpit of the Falcon, along with some of his reinforcements. Despite this, they are still no match for the First Order, until Luke finally shows up after some encouragement from Yoda. Luke thoroughly humiliates Kylo Ren in front of his entire army before gracefully disappearing, becoming one with the Force.
Rey, Poe, Finn, Rose, Leia, Lando, Holdo and the surviving Resistance escape abroad the Millenium Falcon with hopes to rebuild the Rebellion and take the fight back to the First Order. No broom boy this time though lol.
And there it is, how I would've improve The Last Jedi's story. No more morally-ambiguous Luke and questionable competence of Holdo. Lando is back and Ackbar gets to go out like a badass, and all the interesting twists in the film are still there. Some remaining plot holes of the last film gets addressed like Lor San Tekka's story and the New Republic's state after the First Order bombed it all to hell. What do you guys think?
